The most thorough form is a physical extraction, which makes a bit-for-bit copy of the device’s storage. This captures everything the device contains, including hidden areas, system data, and even data that has been deleted but not yet overwritten, giving a complete forensic image you can hash to verify integrity and reuse for examination later.

Deleting data would destroy evidence and is not part of acquisition. Copying only user-generated files misses artifacts, metadata, and the broader data set needed for a full analysis. A firmware update would alter the device’s content and could contaminate or invalidate the evidence.
